Some Randomness

The night arrives silently
as I lie quietly in my bed
it moves over me
envelops me
fills me with darkness
I reach out to it
caress it
listen to the sighs of the wind
like the sighs of a lover
moving through the trees
rustling the leaves
playing over my body.
The wind blows faster,
the night becomes deeper
blacker
the stars struggle to be seen
they relinquish the fight
the night is given over
to blackness
and the violent wind
confronting each other.
The moon and I are voyeurs
of the struggle between
the wind and the night.

live today
live
see all that is around you
taste all the pleasures
smell all the roses
Today is a gift
held firmly in your grasp
like a penny in the fist of a child
unwrap it
open it
take it out
examine it
use it
don't stick it in a drawer
like a grandmother
one size fits all
the color is bound to be right
live fiercely
it won't break
the batteries won't wear out
the more you use it
the more it gives you
squeeze that last bit from it
like an old-fashioned toothpaste tube
the gift has been given to you today
don't count on tomorrow
there is no tomorrow
tomorrow is a sad song sung by a red haired girl with a dog
shakespeare said it best
tomorrow is like depending on an enemy yo give you food
tomorrow is unknown
full of possibilities
generated by today
tomorrow is a myth
the day library books are due
tomorrow is a day for procrastinators
who choose not to live today
whether for fear or laziness
tomorrow is the day after today
maybe
maybe not
tomorrow is not today
today is what you have
tomorrow is a promise by a thief
why waste today?

I am being eaten by my past
I've done nothing to be ashamed of
yet is consumes me
follows me every step of my day
influencing my movements
my actions
my very thoughts are hounded
history is like a ball and chain attached to my feet
never escaped
never eluded
I gnaw at the iron like an armless prisoner
trying to break free.

Some older stuff, hopefully not depressing

I sit dreaming on a stump
in the late winter
watching the beaming sun
move with spidery shadows through the branches
rippling the dry grass in the meadow
a starling screeches
silence breeches
the thickening walls of sound
grasses whisper
branches shiver
a fawn stares through the trees
slowly, silently, a breeze
weaves through the limbs
stirring none
silence reigns

***

Ashes
lying in the fireplace
silky to the touch.
Undigested bits of wood and paper
mar the softness
the remnants if a fire burning brightly in the night
lending a rosy glow to
the lovers' faces.
As the wine glasses empty,
the fire dies down.
Embers glowing softly in the dark.
The lovers fall asleep as the
fire slowly dies.
Neither waking as the bits of
wood crack and pop.
The fire dies
and the lovers move closer,
seeking warmth from each other.
At last,
the fire is dead.
The only things left are
the lovers and the
ashes.

***

Children
running in the night
over the silent field
holding hands
running in the rain
Stars
Shining so bright
over the silent field
laughing with the children
sparkling in the rain
Grass
carpeting their flight
over the field
emerald green
growing in the rain
Love
ever so bright
over the silent field
falling with the dew
falling with the rain

Some Haiku for You

This is a depressing way to start a blog, but there you go:

The melon baller
scooped out my soul so cleanly
not a trace was left
8/26/10

When the worst happens
it becomes the new normal
but worse things lurk still
8/26/10

In my misery
I am thinking in haiku
short bursts of sadness
8/26/10

Summer is ending
so long, so hot, so so sad
I hate this season
8/26/10

An unhappy man
brings unhappiness with him
and smothers all joy
8/26/10

For better or worse
but only just once
is what my vows should have read
I drank up my 'for worse'
while waiting in vain for 'for better'
to come.
Now where am I?
For poorer for sure
In sickness? In health?
The defeated lawyer in me could argue
that I've used up one 'worse'
and one 'sickness'
or vice versa.
Not
two 'for worse' or
Two 'in sickness'.
Inconstant lover
Failing at the second sign of weakness
Did I, in your mind,
break my vows
by needing too much?
